America’s Young Heroes Journal: A Celebration

Part I is devoted to “hero stories” about youngsters who overcame mental, emotional or physical challenges with a positive attitude and about those who demonstrated compassion, caring, self-respect and respect for others as well as tolerance and understanding toward peers of diverse intellectual, socio-economic, cultural or age differences. The stories are divided according to themes: Compassion, Friendship…

The poem “Helping Hands” is about a kindhearted 14 year old girl who learned how to sign because “She loves the deaf, their world she joins and makes their life a joy.”

In another poem, we learn about Carolyn’s Compassionate Children, a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization and web site created by a nurturing 16 year old for young people with life threatening illnesses: “Go to www.childrencc.com, and open your heart”!

A poem on teen friendships is truly uplifting: “Starting out at a new school, I thought I was alone… You weren’t afraid of what others thought or what they would do.”

Courage is really felt when reading about a teen’s rescue of his mom and younger siblings when their car swerved, flew over the guardrail and hit the water. As the family “car began to sink and fill up with water”, the teen “proceeded to pick my sister and me up and swim us to safety…”

Part II invites teens to participate in “Hero Activities”. The “Hero Checklist” inspires them to examine the qualities of their heroes and self examine their own so that they can discover the hero they were born to be. The Talent/Skills…Survey helps them identify their personal aptitudes and gifts so as to possibly apply them in problem-solving, decision-making situations. “What’s Bugging You” further assists teens in making positive choices and taking sensible action.
